Llanishen Country Park

Campaigners symbolise 'tug of war' between renewable energy and nuclear power outside National Assembly

Llanishen Reservoir Country Park

A country park stretching from Roath Park, past the Llandennis Oval and along the Nant Fawr. It would include both reservoirs and go along the Nant Ty Draw stream to the M4. It would then continue
on to Caerphilly Mountain.

This would provide changing scenary from the heart of the city to the northern foothills. Four miles of woodlands, meadows, lakes, sports fields, and tranquil paths would be integrated by careful
planning, sensitive design and public participation.

The two small woods north of the reservoir with marshy habitat would provide a natural buffer to the SSSI. Llanishen Reservoir's birds - mainly roosting gulls and cormorants - need less protection.
Proper paths would be provided to protect fungi and flowering plants. The re-establishment of the old fish stock ponds would increase bio-diversity, particularly for amphibians and aquatic insects
like dragonflies. A new pond south of the pumping station and a nature trail through the small woodland are other possibilities.

Recreation

There would be three main focuses for recreational activity:

  • The Sailing Centre would build on the highly successful Royal Yachting Association accredited centre. This is acknowledged as the best centre of its kind in South Wales. Improvements to slipway
access, boat storage facilities, and replacing the buildings could make this a national focus for sailing. In addition to sailing and canoeing courses, they could introduce windsurfing and diving,
an area for teaching beginners and full access for the disabled.
  • Fishing on the reservoirs it has been steadily run down recently. Cardiff Reservoirs Fly Fishing Club has drawn up an outline Business Plan to create a Trout Fishery for club members and the
    general public.
  • Environmental Centre. This would be housed alongside, or be part of, the rebuilt sailing centre. It would be a community resource and meeting place. It would allow people to learn more about
    the natural world.

The aim would be for the general public to come for relaxation and enjoyment within a semi-rural setting. This includes families, picnickers, walkers and cyclists.
