** Campaign update **

Thanks to your efforts the National Assembly for Wales passed a strong law that prevented GM crops from being grown in Wales. The UK Government later abandoned it's attempts to grow GM crops in the UK.

This action is now closed. Thank you to everyone who took part.

GM-free scarecrows march on the Assembly

23 February 2005

As Scarecrows descended on London in February for an anti-GM lobby a similar scene could be seen at the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff. Friends of the Earth Cymru, local Friends of the Earth Groups, the Farmers’ Union of Wales, GM Free Cymru and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes – Wales organised a scarecrow rally outside the Assembly to demand the right to grow and eat GM Free Food.

Inside the Assembly campaigners heard Assembly Members (AMs) from all parties pledge their support for the campaign. There was a clear agreement from the AMs there that they want to keep Wales GM Free. They were proud that the Assembly refused to agree to the listing of the GM maize seed ChardonLL. They are determined to make GM ‘coexistence’ legislation as tough as possible. The Assembly is expected to consult on ‘coexistence’ laws in the coming months.
