Incinerator - public information session, Fri 30th July

In a shock move, Cardiff Council have granted planning permission to Viridor's second application for an incinerator in Splott. This is in spite of the fact that the new application is almost identical to the first application which was refused by the Council. This was an unwelcome surprise as Cardiff Friends of the Earth had phoned the council before the planning meeting and been told that Viridor's application would not be heard. Not only was Viridor's application for the incinerator heard at the meeting, but planning permission was also granted. We are furious about this and have been looking into all available channels to stop this huge, wasteful and polluting incinerator from going ahead.

Rubbish bin

In order to operate their giant burner in Splott, Viridor need an Environmental Permit which is issued by the Environment Agency.

The Environment Agency are holding a public information session at the STAR Leisure Centre, Splott Road, between 2.00pm and 7.00pm on Friday 30th July 2010.

The public information session will give people the opportunity to view the Environment Agency's draft decision as to whether to grant an environmental permit or not. Environment Agency officers will be able available to talk generally about the scheme and to discuss the proposed draft decision.

The draft decision should be posted on the Environment Agency website on Monday 26th July, so you can read the draft decision documents ahead of the Star Centre session.

Please visit the information session, if only for half an hour, and let the Environment Agency know the strength of feeling against the proposed incinerator.
