No tar sands oil in Europe

Native American looking at open cast mining of tar sands

An EU climate law that could prohibit tar sands oil getting into Europe has been watered down following pressure from the Canadian government and big oil companies.

The Beaver Lake Cree live in north east Alberta in Canada. The mining of tar sands oil is fragmenting a huge area of forest, polluting the air and water, disturbing wildlife and threatening the Beaver Lake Cree’s traditional way of life. Exploitation of the tar sands oil is set to triple in the area in the next few years.

We don’t need to import tar sands fuel or to exploit other unconventional fossil fuels such as shale gas.

We have the resources to provide clean renewable energy while creating thousands of jobs. But the Government must speed up their development to secure the benefits and avoid dangerous climate change.
