Viridor Waste Management have submitted a second planning application for a large incinerator or “energy from waste facility” in Cardiff. This application is almost identical to the first one which was rejected by Cardiff Council. The proposed Viridor incinerator would be at Trident Park in Splott, between Ocean Way and the docks. It would burn 350,000 tonnes of waste a year.
The Viridor's Cardiff incinerator application faced widespread opposition from local residents, local councillors and Cardiff Friends of the Earth who ran a successful campaign against it. Viridor's first application for an incinerator will now go to a planning inquiry. Cardiff Friends of the Earth are continuing to fight Viridor's incinerator and will be giving evidence at the inquiry.
In their second planning application Viridor give an assurance that no waste will be brought in from outside south east Wales, however increasing recycling rates during the lifetime of the incinerator are likely to make them break this promise.
They also say that they have made changes to the layout of the incinerator so they can retrieve recyclable items from the waste before it is burnt. We wonder why this wasn't in their first planning application.
Viridor's second planning application fails to address almost all of Cardiff Friends of the Earth's objections.
