Environmental mini opera comes to Cardiff - Saturday, May 7th

Come and watch The Opera Group in any one of eight performances of their mini opera Save the Diva on the morning and afternoon of Saturday 7th May 2011 at different locations in Cardiff city centre and Cardiff Bay.

The mini opera is about a post climate change world visited by seven angels on a fact-finding mission. Cardiff Friends of the Earth will have a stall at each location with leaflets including information about main opera performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff in Cardiff on evening Monday 20th June 2011.

Keep the pressure on

The campaign against the Cardiff incinerator continues apace. Our voices are starting to be heard:

the Environment Agency has delayed its final decision on whether to grant an Environmental Permit for the incinerator pending further investigations into the possible health impacts. The Environment Agency say that they will make an announcement of their decision the end of October.

FoE Cardiff update

Just a quick note to let you know about a couple of exciting things going on:

Feed Cardiff -

On Saturday 9th October, Cardiff Food Alliance (a partnership between ourselves and the Cardiff Transition Project) will be offering shoppers in Cardiff City Centre a free, freshly cooked meal and some food for thought about making farming more sustainable.

Demonstration outside Environment Agency Office - Thursday, 12th August

Come and show the Environment Agency what you think of their draft decision to grant an enviromental permit to Viridor for their incinerator in Splott.

Venue: Environment Agency Office, 29 Newport Road, CF24 0TP
Date: Thursday, 12th August
Time: 12 - 2pm

Following the draft decision, there is now a 28 day public consultation by the Environment Agency; we need to show them the strength of opposition to this over-sized polluting burner in the heart of the city.

Incinerator - Please Take Action!

The Environment Agency has announced that it is 'minded' to give the go-ahead to a massive, polluting and wasteful incinerator at Ocean Park in Cardiff. However it is not too late to change their minds.

Please Take Action:

  • Public Drop in Session: Friday 30th July, 2pm-7pm in the Star Leisure Centre, Splott Road

If you live in Splott, Butetown, Adamsdown or anywhere else in Cardiff, please go to this session and raise your concerns with them.

Environment Agency public meeting on incinerator

In a shock move, the council have granted planning permission to Viridor's second application for an incinerator in Splott. This is in spite of the fact that the new application is almost identical to the first application which was denied by the council. This was an unwelcome surprise as Cardiff Friends of the Earth had phoned the council prior to the planning meeting and been told that Viridor's application would not be heard; not only was it then heard, but also granted.

Ely Bridge Campaign

Cardiff FoE is actively involved in campaigning for a pedestrian and cycle bridge to link Penarth and Cardiff. The bridge would provide vital access to the massive International Sports Village (ISV) Development, which at present really only caters for car users. The Cogan Rail station – only 500 yards or so away from the site – would allow people from all over Wales to get to the ISV via public transport, but at present access is impossible, because pedestrians are banned from using the Cogan Spur dual carriageway.
