Christmas and other celebrations

We all enjoy celebrating special occasions, but we often forget how much waste they can produce.

  • Buy wrapping paper in rolls, rather than single sheets which could mean that you use more than you need or have waste that can not be used.
  • Save festive ribbons and bows for re-use on gifts throughout the year.
  • Consider buying an artificial Christmas tree
  • If you want a real tree, buy one with roots which can be replanted in the garden until next year. Don't forget to water it when it is in the house. Don't move it streight from the warm house into the cold garden - the shock could kill it. Instead leave it in an unheated garage or shed for 24 hours to adjust to the cold before planting it.
  • If you buy a tree without roots, arrange for the tree to be collected for shredding in the new year - phone the council to ask if they have a shredding service.
