The Prosiect Gwyrdd contract to burn waste in Viridor’s Cardiff incinerator may be stopped by the Environment Bill. The council was due to be sign an expensive 25-year contract with Viridor at the end of September, but it is threatened by the draft Bill which was published on 23rd October.

Friends of the Earth Cymru has launched a legal challenge against plans by the Welsh Government to fund a massive £105m waste incinerator in Cardiff. The action comes as Cardiff City Council and its partners are poised to sign a contract committing the city to 25 years of waste incineration.

The councillors of Caerphilly, Cardiff, Monmouthshire, Newport, and Vale of Glamorgan are due in the next few days to vote on whether to accept Viridor's bid to burn council black bag waste in their incinerator.

Cardiff Council have withdrawn Viridor's application for discharging planning preconditions on the Cardiff incinerator from both the August and September planning meetings.

The Ombudsman decided that the previous Cardiff council administration was guilty of maladministration because they failed to consult Cardiff people properly on the Cardiff incinerator planning application.

Viridor's Cardiff incinerator development has now reached a critical stage. Pressure from Cardiff Against the Incinerator has forced Cardiff Council to comply with planning law by consulting local residents on the planning conditions.

Campaigners from Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport protested today at the National Assembly of Wales today against Welsh Government sponsored incineration schemes. This comes against a background of council incompetence and incinerator bids collapsing.
