Campaigners from Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport protested today at the National Assembly of Wales today against Welsh Government sponsored incineration schemes. This comes against a background of council incompetence and incinerator bids collapsing.

We are holding a mass rally at the National Assembly building in Cardiff Bay on 15 November 2011 at 12 pm and you will be able to voice your concerns about the proposals to build incinerators to your AM.

Merthyr campaign victory over Covanta

Smoke rising from an incinerator chimney

Campaigners in Merthyr Tydfil and the Valleys have won their campaign against Covanta's application for a 750,000-tonne incinerator at Brig y Cwm, Merthyr Tydfil. Congratulations to them on their victory.

This proves that a mass, community-based campaign can work and that we can stop incineration, not just in individual towns, but in all of Wales.

Stop incinerator ash being classed as recycling

Waste incinerator chimney

The Welsh Assembly Government is consulting on its future waste policy. If the guidance is not changed it will allow bottom ash from incinerators to be included in recycling targets.

There are serious concerns over whether this ash is safe. Doing this also supports incineration as a way of dealing with municipal waste often at the expense of recycling.

Environment Agency decision on the Cardiff incinerator announced

black smoke coming out of an industrial chimney

On 4 November 2010 the Environment Agency announced its decision on whether give Viridor an Environmental Permit to operate their huge, polluting and wasteful incinerator in Cardiff. Unfortunately they have chosen to ignore the evidence that the Cardiff Against the Incinerator campaign submitted and have given Viridor the green light.

Despite this setback the campaign goes on.

National Assembly incinerator protest

A big thank you to everyone who attended the Cardiff Incinerator Protest at the National Assembly building in Cardiff Bay on 12 October. About 30 people attended which is good for a week day. Our message is really getting through to those who matter. We need to keep up the pressure if we are to succeed.
